Community Writing Circle

Join Minor Arcana Press and Old Growth for our upcoming Community Writing Circle. This monthly event provides a space for writers of all experience levels to get together, have fun and write. There will be prompts and an opportunity to share with the group. Following the event hop over to Gas Works Park for our Summer BBQ and Open Mic!

GRNW 2015: Registration Now Open!

When: Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015
Where: Seattle Central Public Library

Registration for the third annual Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up is now available online. GRNW 2015 will feature a full day of conference activities that focus on LGBTQ romance fiction, including panel discussions, pitch sessions, writing workshops, a reader meet-up, and a post-conference book fest and after party for book signings, mingling, and author readings.

Summer BBQ and Open Mic

When: Sunday, Aug. 2nd, 5:00-7:00pm
Where: Gas Works Park

On August 2 at 5pm, join us for an afternoon BBQ and open mic. All are welcome to join, and we will be celebrating the end of our spring Writer’s Workshops. Please bring food or drinks to share – we will have some items available to grill. Starting at 5pm, there will be an open mic for anyone who would like to read (5min approx.) original work. We especially invite all Workshop participants to share writing from the past year. We will be at picnic tables 3, 4 and 5 by the play barn.

Out of this World: A Night of Queer Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Speculative Fiction

When: July 2nd, 7pm

Gay City and Gay Romance Northwest are partnering together for a special Gay City “Meet the Author”event with four writers which will boldly explore star systems and fantasy realms while spotlighting LGBTQ main characters and relationships.

Join us for an out-and-proud and out-of-this-world evening of readings by writers Astrid Amara, Matthew Buscemi, Kim Fielding, Laylah Hunter and Nisi Shawl. From Lambda Literary-nominated fantasies to powerful and thought-provoking science fiction stories, each author takes the reader on an exciting, imaginative journey.

Join Minor Arcana Press and Old Growth Northwest forALT_PRIDE Edition of Community Writing Circle with guest writer Cody Pherigo. This event will be a great addition to (or break from) your regularly scheduled pride activities. Writers of all experience levels are welcome to attend, meet each other, and write in a collaborative and queer-centered environment. Our guest writer Cody Pherigo will take us through a few writing exercises and prompts to get us going, then we’ll spend some quality time writing and sharing our work. Cody will also be available to answer questions and offer feedback/critique.

Old Growth Northwest is excited to present Volume XIV of our Reading and Open Mic series, an event melting like an sun-bathed ice cream cone with literary intensity. Our headlining readers for this volume will be local talents Maged Zaher, Laylah Hunter, and Bryan Edenfield. The prompt for this reading is: “They awoke to the first day in their first house.” The headline performances will be followed by our open mic, as always, so feel free to prepare ~5min of material and arrive early for sign ups!

Old Growth Northwest is excited to present Volume XIII of our series, an event packed with so many bright spring flowers we’ve barely got room to put out the chairs. Arrive early to sign up for a 5min open mic slot. Our headlining readers for April include the talented Imani Sims, Nathan Fowler and Janie Miller. The three readers will read original material in addition to their short responses to a common prompt. The authors also have their texts projected onto a screen behind them as they read.  The April prompt: “At the age of six I was already sure I was the last prophet.”

Intergenerational Poetry Event

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Old Growth Northwest is teaming up with Bayview Retirement Community for an afternoon of intergenerational verse. Featuring local poets Priscilla Long and M. Anne Sweet, the event will include an open mic where writers and poetry fans of all ages may present their work. In particular, we will celebrate writing from participants of the Bayview poetry workshop, taught by facilitator Benjamin Schmitt.

2014 Year in Review

2014 Year End ReportWe couldn’t have done it without you.

2014 was a big year for Old Growth. In our first full yearof programming:

– 200 people attended the second annual Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up (GRNW)
– We participated in a documentary called The Prison Within as part of Voices Beyond Bars
– We featured authors from Reading & Open Mic shared 8,231 original words in response to prompts
